Connect Google Merchant Center to Shopify

Step 1: Install the Google & YouTube App in Shopify

  • In your Shopify Admin, go to Apps → Add
  • Search for "Google & YouTube" (by Google) 
  • Click Install App

Step 2: Connect Your Google Accounts

  • Open the Google & YouTube app
  • Connect your Google Account
  • Connect your Google Ads Account
  • Connect your Google Merchant Center Account (create one if needed)

Step 3: Verify and Claim Your Domain

  • The app will automatically verify your domain and claim it in Merchant Center 
  • No manual tag implementation is needed

Step 4: Sync Products to Google Merchant Center

  • Inside the app, choose your product feed settings:
    • Country: United States
    • Destination: Free Listings + Shopping Ads
  • Approve which products to sync
  • Make sure products have clean images, pricing, and availability info

Step 5: Enable Free Listings & Shopping Ads

  • Go to Google Merchant Center → Growth → Manage Programs
  • Enable:
    • Free Listings
    • Shopping Ads

Step 6: Set Up Conversion Tracking in Google Ads

  • Go to Tools & Settings → Conversions
  • Import conversions from Shopify via the "Google & YouTube" app
    • You will have to go to Data Manager > Shopify to import conversions
  • You should see:
    • Purchase
    • Add to Cart
    • Begin Checkout
  • Set Purchase as your Primary conversion goal

Step 7: Verify Conversions Using Tag Assistant

  • Open your site in Chrome and use Google Tag Assistant
  • Simulate activity (add to cart, begin checkout, etc.)
  • Confirm each event is firing correctly

Step 8: Place a Test Purchase

  • In Shopify, enable a manual payment method (e.g. "Test Order – Do Not Fulfill")
  • Complete a test checkout using that method
  • Confirm in Google Ads that the Purchase conversion fires
